Putting together this homework cart was a real lifesaver for my family. Everything they need to complete their daily homework is found on this cart. There is no more fussing about not finding a sharp pencil or a sheet of paper. The cart is placed in a convenient area where the kids sit to do homework after school (At this moment, it’s our breakfast table.) What I love about this homework cart is that it is not a permanent piece in our breakfast area. When I have parties or a houseguest, I can roll it into a closet to hide it away.
I found this rolling cart in the kitchen isle at IKEA for around $30, and they come in a variety of colors as well. There is a similar cart available at Sam’s Club.
The top tier holds the typical papers that they would need to do homework: lined notebook paper, blank white paper, and red base line handwriting paper for my little ones. There is an electric pencil sharpener and pencil cup for them to easily grab a pencil from.
The second tier has all of the art supplies: crayons, markers, pencil crayons, tape, stapler, glue, rulers, etc. The kids know that they must always put everything back once they’ve used it. Sometimes it does need a little reorganizing.
The bottom tier holds all of the papers that come home from school. This tier GREATLY helps de-clutter my kitchen counters!! Once I’ve seen all their graded papers, I throw it in here. Sometimes the school sends home flyers that I don’t want to throw away because it has important info on it so I put those here also. At the end of the month, I grab a trash bag and throw away everything unless it’s something important like a progress report or report card.
Putting together and organizing this homework cart was such a cinch to do, and I hope that you are able to put something similar together to make homework time a little bit sweeter.
